Johnson trounced his eventual Republican opponent and Senate colleague Barry Goldwater by the widest margin of popular votes in American history in `64. He rocked him in the electoral college as well 10-to-1. It was the most significant electoral massacre in the GOP's history.
The Republicans didn't have to wait long for a successful candidate. With LBJ's decision not to run, the Democrats had a wide open field of candidates amidst political chaos and division over the Vietnam War, Great Society legislation, and numerous cultural movements pulling the party in different directions. Humphrey and Muskie could only muster 13 states in a solid loss against former Vice President Richard Nixon, with Democratic voters in 5 Deep South states going with independent George Wallace. Despite the popular vote only being around half a million in difference, Nixon reached 301 electoral votes with his home state of California behind him.
