4to. Original photoillustrated black wrappers, lettered in black to front photoillustration and in white to spine; pp. [64]; photo-illustrations throughout; some creasing to front, wear and some chipping to spine; some toning to margins of pages, previous owner’s name in blue ink to half-title; very good; ‘ex libris’ bookplate signed by Clark tipped in to front pastedown (see below).
First edition of Larry Clark’s first book, from the photographer’s own library and bearing one of his signed ‘ex libris’ bookplates.
Composed of photographs taken between 1963 and 1971, Tulsa is an extraordinary insight into the lives of a group of young people navigating drug addiction and sexual relationships. One of the most influential and controversial photobooks, it gave Larry Clark almost immediate international acclaim. In the foreword to this book, Clark writes ‘when i was sixteen i started shooting amphetamine. i shot with my friends for three years and then left town but i’ve gone back through the years [sic]’. Rather than photographing his subjects as a documentary photographer external to the events, Clark was a consistent participant in the episodes he portrays, often appearing himself in group compositions. The varied black and white images in Tulsa hold a resulting authenticity and emotional intimacy.
Provenance: From the library of Larry Clark. Clark’s ‘ex libris’ forms part of a 1992 box set of ten, each featuring a different photograph by Clark, created to raise funds for Printed Matter. The series also includes bookplates designed by Jenny Holzer, Eric Fischl, and Faith Ringgold.
