_____________________________________________________________________________

As a statement on the state of things, Gene Deitch can crack his knuckles and create an image for all time. I am happy... very happy... to present several here at The Grand Review from the post war period that speak to different aspects of the era, all with a focus on jazz. Early jazz, as revered by the avid, even fanatical record collectors of that period, and where jazz and the reality of race relations intersected, a crossing which Gene Deitch addressed visually in the most natural way, that of course being revolutionary in its simplicity.

Most of us know Deitch's work in one way or another from a life in animation and illustration. Tom & Jerry cartoons for Hanna Barbera - MGM, the more obscure yet amazing Sidney The Elephant for Terrytoons and, for a very young me, Tom Terrific for UPA.

This short intro to a truly remarkable life feels like I'm doing someone who I consider a pop culture icon somewhat of a disservice. To learn more about him, and he's worth the journey, I highly recommend The Cat On The Hot Thin Groove, all about his beginnings as an illustrator and his unabashed love of jazz, and For the Love of Prague: The True Love Story of the Only Free American in Prague During 30 Years of Communism which is, first and foremost, a love story... and not just about Prague!

Cat On A Hot Thin Groove pulls you in to the wild treasure hunting world of 1940s jazz collectors who were crazy for 1920s jazz. This is a work that included other young fanatics like Nesuhi Ertegun and Jerry Wexler, later of Atlantic Records. Weller's excellent and essential autobiography, Rhythm and the Blues: A Life in American Music describes his being a teenager in the 40s and zooming all over New York City searching for dusty boxes of old jazz 78s. If you have ever really loved music to the point where it reaches into your soul and causes you to do crazy things, Gene Deitch and Jerry Wexler are your people.

This third of three restorations we've completed, eventually to become six all told, invites us into an aspect of nighttime entertainment.  Gene describes this cover as being someone he can't be sure who it was, etc.  Well, that is very late, very lit jazz elegant, or very late, very lit jazz drag.  I used to tend bar and work security at late night punk / new wave bars and clubs in New York, Philly and London, and I know that face, no matter what the decade.

The amazing thing is, of course, that Gene Deitch has managed to capture all that into a compelling and appealing moment.  This print brings an instant smile of wicked solidarity to the faces of anyone who has ever stayed up past the time when good young ladies and good young men should already be tucked into bed.

A NOTE ON OUR PROCESS, OUR CHOICES AND THE QUALITY OF THE GRAPHIC CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO OUR PRINTS.

Every print we deem exciting enough to present to the public via our Etsy store or available here at our studio has gone through a number of steps. The first of those is always discovering and falling in love with an obscure image, always an original that we can hold in our hands. That image is speaking to us, sometime screaming “Don’t leave me here. See what I am, what I was, what I can be, what I SHOULD be!”

There is a real sense of excitement involved, and a great many smiles and knowing grins when we make that deal and bring that ancient print, that battered photo, that scrap of ephemera that contains some scrap of genius from an unknown commercial artist home with us, knowing already how we mean to approach its restoration.

There is the heady promise of a further hunt just as real as what drags a weekend fisherman out of bed at 3AM to work a favorite brook as we start our research, looking for that great backstory, and both ready and willing to tumble down as many rabbit holes as are revealed to us to get that story.

Then there is a meticulous digital restoration that is as often as much fun as riding a vintage Moto Guzzi on a winding coastal road. I don’t care if that sounds crazy, it really is like jumping in the saddle! So many choices, so many chances to take to subtly or spectacularly give new life to otherwise permanently obscure images.

This dedication and the ongoing rush of joy in the accomplishment of it, and the opportunity to share the results in our studio and here on Etsy, is the fire of passion that keeps these engines roaring. We make every effort to ensure our customers are not just satisfied but thrilled, and we happily stand 100% behind our work.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Fantastic writing and non-stop action
Format: Kindle
This is a promising, fantastic beginning to what will be a 4-book series. Some readers may be content to read only the first 2 books, but I think you'll find that the story is so good that you'll want to keep reading books 3 and 4. Book 1 is about omega Elvana's introduction to the "Starling" brothers and their search for another missing person, Kelly. It's a bit of a rocky start, with deception and betrayal a key element. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.

Fun read
Format: Kindle
I'm not really into mafia books but I love Roxy Collin's other series so I decided to give it a try. It had the same great romance, spice, swoon-worthy characters and exciting plot that are her signature. Arben was my favorite, although it was a bit sudden how quickly he changed from ignoring her to wanting to be pack. There were almost too many twists/layers of lies to keep track of but I'm looking forward to reading the other books. The only thing that detracted from the story for me was the need for a bit more proofreading. It was mentioned that Kelly is a female and male at different points, leading me to think she changed her mind at some point about the character's gender but didn't go back and edit it to align in all places. Like another reviewer pointed out, step siblings are different than half siblings. They are incorrectly referred to as step siblings because they (allegedly) share the same biological dad. There are a few other typos as well but those aren't a big deal.
