These traditional Japanese wa-rousoku candles are crafted from 100% sumac wax, derived from the fruit of Japanese Ha-ze (wax trees) grown in the Chikugo region of Kyushu.
The TOHAKU series is inspired by the atmospheric pine forests depicted in the paintings of Tohaku Hasegawa, one of Japan’s greatest artists, originally from Nanao City in Ishikawa Prefecture—also the hometown of Takazawa Candle Co., who has been making candles since 1892.
This set includes two medium-size candles, each with an approximate burn time of 130 minutes, presented in a simple paper-lidded box.
Please note:
A candle stand is not included. These candles require a stand that fits their size. We recommend the KOMA Medium stand, Round Candle Stand or Candle Stand with Handle for best fit and performance.

When freshly made, the candles may appear darker in color, but they will naturally whiten over time, developing a beautiful patina.
Unlike traditional wa-rousoku, which are crafted entirely by hand without the use of molds, TOHAKU candles are made using molds—but each one is still carefully handmade with great attention to detail.

- Each candle has a small hole at the bottom and it needs to be used on the right size candle stand with a stick that is specially made for Japanese candles.

The candles are in their natural color. Over time, depending on the harvest year, the passage of time, or exposure to sunlight, they may gradually turn a whitish hue.
