Discover the captivating life of one of history's most compelling figures with 'Bonaparte' by Patrice Gueniffey. This brand-new hardcover edition, published by Harvard University Press in 2015, offers a deep dive into the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era through a lens that has garnered acclaim as a masterwork in French historical writing. Gueniffey meticulously chronicles Napoleon's extraordinary journey from his modest beginnings in Corsica to his dramatic ascension as a key military leader during the Italian and Egyptian campaigns.

This historical biography stands out as it transcends traditional narratives. Rather than merely portraying Napoleon as a Machiavellian politician or a military genius, Gueniffey presents a rich, nuanced portrait of the man behind the legend. Readers encounter both the passionate young cadet in love with Josephine and the ambitious general dominating battlefields. This engaging narrative paints a vivid backdrop of the upheavals and global rivalries that shaped Napoleon's rise and his crucial role in state-building during a transformative era.

'Bonaparte' is not only a detailed account of a historical figure; it’s an exploration of the modern quest for self-determination and destiny. As Gueniffey asserts, Napoleon's legacy resonates through history, making this book an essential read for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in understanding the complexities of power, ambition, and identity. Dive into the riveting world of Bonaparte and grasp a significant chapter of our shared history.

Entertaining, informative, without being overwhelming.
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Got it for, basically, half-off standard retail. At that price, it's a fine addition to the WWII library. Some interesting information displayed in a mostly entertaining way. I get that battle maps are always a challenge (maps are static - battles are dynamic). This does a fairly adequate job - better than most battle maps - though far from groundbreaking. item arrived well packed - no issues with binding (as some others seem to report). Though the book overall is a bit "warped" and several of the maps are mis-printed or mis-cut as to make them unusable. 3 bad out of 300 - not horrible - again at the price I paid. If the subject interest you - I'd suggest getting - but not a "must have".

For the history buff or student - this is worth the purchase
Format: Hardcover
Detailed, individual maps and history on the battles of World War II. It isn’t too overwhelming for the student and is an enjoyable read for the history buff. Hardback so it will ensure lots of reading and reviews, durable pages too (not those thin, flimsy, easily tearable pages!) - this book will likely stand the test of our schooling years and beyond.
