Jig Workflow

Why Use a Jig?

A jig is used to verify the accuracy of your digital scan before moving forward with a full-arch restoration.

Intraoral scanners capture teeth extremely well. However, when scanning large edentulous spans—where scan bodies are surrounded only by soft tissue (gingiva)—the scanner may struggle to accurately “stitch” the data together. This can cause the scan bodies to appear slightly closer together or farther apart in the digital scan than they are clinically.

This type of error is known as a mis-stitched scan, and it can lead to misalignment in a full-arch restoration.

The purpose of a jig is to confirm that your scan data is accurate before proceeding—saving time, cost, and frustration later in the process.

How to Order a Jig

  1. Place the multi-unit abutments (MUAs) in the patient.

  2. Attach the scan bodies to the MUAs.

  3. Take an intraoral scan with the scan bodies in place.

  4. Submit an order for a Jig here by uploading the scan.

What Happens at Alien Milling

  1. Alien Milling receives your scan.

  2. A verification jig is digitally designed from your scan data.

  3. The jig is precision-milled in titanium.

  4. The completed jig is shipped back to your office.

Jig Workflow After Receipt

  1. Place the jig intraorally on top of the MUAs.

  2. Screw the jig down using a cross-pattern (criss-cross) sequence, tightening gradually.

    • Do not fully tighten one side before the others.

  3. Ensure there is no rocking or resistance as the jig seats.

What You’re Checking

  • The jig should seat passively, without forcing, pulling, or pushing.

  • A passive fit confirms your original scan was stitched accurately.

If you feel resistance or the jig does not seat passively, this indicates the original scan was not accurately stitched. In this case:

  • A new scan will be required

  • A new jig should be ordered before proceeding

Why This Matters

The jig is a critical verification step in full-arch workflows. It ensures that your digital foundation is accurate so everything that follows—design, milling, and final restoration—is built on reliable, precise data.

Using a jig early can help prevent costly remakes and protect your full-arch case from avoidable errors.
