‘Ze is het eerste kind dat ik in India ontmoet, al loop ik haar die ochtend bijna achteloos voorbij. Tegen een pilaar geleund, op de harde grond gezeten. Een oude vrouw geeft haar een zetje wanneer ik eraan kom. Aarzelend komt Priya in haar vuile jurkje en op haar blote voetjes uit de schaduw om mij alles te geven wat een vijfjarig slumkind in India heeft : een glimlach, twee handjes tegen elkaar, een buiging ... en dan snel weer in de veilige armen van haar grootmoeder.
Een vondeling is ze. Of liever, een afdankertje. Weggegeven, misschien wel omdat ze een meisje is. De oude vrouw en haar familie zijn apetrots op haar: nooit laten ze haar nog gaan.
Een paar uur later schrik ik van hun krot, tegen de buitenmuur aangeleund van de school waar ik logeer. Blote voetjes die over bergen afval heen klauteren. Veel meer kinderen nu, met warrig haar en vuile snoetjes. Ik zie bergen problemen, en mijn reis is nog niet eens goed begonnen. Zij zien lachtende Priya die ooit als een geslagen hond over het asfalt kroop. Straks mag ze voor het eerst naar school. Een klein, blij lied van arme, trotse mensen in India.’
