Cannetille was erg populair in de jaren 1820-1830, omdat edelmetalen na de Napoleontische oorlogen erg schaars waren. Cannetille was toen het perfecte medium voor het maken van sieraden, omdat bij deze methode een zeer kleine hoeveelheid goud wordt gebruikt om een zeer groot sieraad te maken. Cannetille wordt nog steeds geproduceerd, als reproducties van antieke sieraden en vooral voor traditionele regionale klederdrachten.
