Hammond, die Dylan eerder naar het label had gehaald. De opname was een snelle en efficiënte bezitting, slechts gemaakt in enkele uren en kostte volgens Hammond ongeveer 402 dollar. Het album bestaat voornamelijk uit folkstandaards, aangevuld met twee originele composities van Dylan zelf. De meeste nummers werden in één enkele take opgenomen, omdat Dylan weigerde tweede takes op te nemen. Hij zei hierover: "Ik kan mezelf niet zien dezelfde song twee keer achter elkaar te zingen. Dat is vreselijk." Het album introduceert de eerste stappen van Dylan als professionele muzikant en vormt de basis waarop zijn legendarische unieke stijl is gebouwd.
