Sonni’s adem schuurt door haar borst. Wat moet ze in vredesnaam antwoorden? SS’ers hebben een hekel aan joden. Als ze ‘ja’ zegt… Maar als ze ‘nee’ antwoordt, liegt ze…
‘Zijn jullie joden?’ herhaalt de SS’er en hij kijkt Sonni indringend aan.
Ze buigt haar hoofd en zegt dan zacht: ‘Ja.’
1938. Er dreigt oorlog. Sonni en haar broertjes en zusjes worden door hun moeder op de trein naar Nederland gezet, in de hoop dat ze daar veilig zullen zijn. Niets is minder waar. Sonni heeft maar één wens: zorgen dat zij en haar broertjes en zusjes bij elkaar kunnen blijven. Ze heeft nog geen idee dat deze treinreis nog maar de allereerste is.
Er zullen er meer volgen, die hen naar kamp Westerbork en uiteindelijk naar Bergen-Belsen brengen…
Martine Letterie reisde naar Israël om de kinderen Birnbaum (inmiddels op hoge leeftijd) te ontmoeten en hun verhaal van binnenuit te vertellen.

It’s a hard no from me

I ordered two of these black, single screen panels several months ago. I ordered an additional four I needed a few days ago so I would have the total of 6 that I ended up needing. I did so by clicking on my past order (2 screens) item page and simply placed my recent order for 4 more. Two of the six screens have bolts that don’t fully screw down, such that one of each panel’s four points where the screen attaches to the two legs isn’t fully screwed down and flush. As a result, the screen doesn’t stay entirely vertical -It’s warped askew. Also, 3 of the six screens are different heights than the other 3. It’s clear to me that this company has ZERO QUALITY CONTROL, as there’s not anything that is even adjustable on these screens that leaves room for user error. Additionally, there are four black rubber circles that come in the “parts/screws” bag that don’t have corresponding installation instructions in the instruction manual. Just spend a little more and go with a better quality product somewhere else.
