Er zijn namelijk wel 970 schapenrassen wereldwijd, waarvan hier vooral de heide- en weideschapen bekend zijn. Deze zijn overigens weer onderverdeeld in vlees- en melkschapen. Bekende, en ooit bijna verdwenen rassen zijn het Drents heideschaap en het Mergellandschaap, een weideschaap. Andere rassen in Nederland zijn onder meer het Belgisch melkschaap, de zwartbles en de Texelaar.
