De Iers-Engelse schrijver C. S. In het Nederlands verschenen meer dan dertig titels van zijn hand. Al die boeken schreef hij in zijn vrije tijd.

Dat Lewis nog meer te bieden heeft, is ook zijn trouwste lezers soms nauwelijks bekend. Tientallen jaren doceerde hij oude Engelse literatuurgeschiedenis, eerst in Oxford, later als hoogleraar in Cambridge. Bij dat werk en op andere manieren maakte hij als schrijver en spreker voortdurend gebruik van een bijzonder talent. Lewis had niet alleen buitengewoon veel gelezen, hij had ook de flair en het vermogen om anderen van zijn belezenheid te laten meegenieten en meeprofiteren.Zoals in deze bundel. Van grote namen als Tolkien en Orwell tot vergeten grootheden als Eddison en Rider Haggard, van oude knarren als Spenser en Dante tot sciencefiction-schrijvers als Arthur C. Clarke en Ray Bradbury, van grammaticales tot sprookjes en mythen: Lewis weet er telkens in weinig woorden iets glashelders en belangrijks over te zeggen. Op verzoek schreef Lewis af en toe ook iets over zijn eigen werk. Nieuwe en oude Lewis-lezers worden er wijzer van. De ontlezing voorbij.

De vertaler schreef een inleiding over de manier waarop deze relatief onbekende kant van Lewis verbonden is met zijn bekendere werk.
