Een klassieke klankschaal met een fijn gegraveerd Ohm symbool aan de binnenzijde. Deze schaal nodigt uit tot een moment van verstilling en bewust geluid.

Deze handgemaakte klankschaal is vervaardigd uit koper, tin en acht edele metalen (Ag, Ni, Cd, Ru, Pd, Pt, Cr, Mn). Elk onderdeel is met aandacht samengesteld voor een rijk en helder klankbeeld.

Gehamerde klankschalen

Het maken van deze gehamerde klankschalen is een zorgvuldig en volledig handmatig proces. Elke schaal wordt met geduld en precisie in vorm gehamerd. Dit gebeurt in meerdere fases, zodat de juiste klank en afmeting ontstaan.
Het begin is het smelten van koper en tin, de basis voor brons, gecombineerd met kleine hoeveelheden van andere metalen, afhankelijk van de schaal. Het gesmolten metaal wordt in mallen gegoten, waarna er schijven ontstaan die verder worden bewerkt.
Vervolgens worden meerdere schijven op elkaar gelegd en roodgloeiend verwarmd. Daarna worden ze handmatig uitgehamd tot de gewenste komvorm. Het is een delicaat proces, waarbij het metaal warm moet blijven om scheuren te voorkomen.
Wanneer de grove vorm is bereikt, volgt het fijne werk. De vorm en klank worden langzaam helemaal afgestemd door opnieuw verwarmen en geduldig handhameren. Tot slot worden de schalen van binnen en buiten geschuurd, gepolijst en eventueel bewerkt met beitels. Zo krijgt elke schaal een unieke uitstraling en heldere klank.

Omdat deze klankschaal met de hand wordt gehamerd in verschillende stadia om de zuivere toon te bereiken, kan de maat iets verschillen. De vermelde afmeting is een richtlijn.

The key to writing a Camino book--at least from this reader's perspective--it to have a well-written, well-edited, and unique personal account of the adventure. I've read many Camino books that lack these three elements. WTTEOTW has all three elements and is a great addition to anyone's Camino library. The book is paced nicely and makes for an easy read. I was amused that the author had spent considerable time preparing for this trip yet seemed not to have absorbed some important information prior to the trip--e.g. appropriate footwear, the scramble for nightly accommodations, the frustrations that commonly occur while traveling in unfamiliar cultures. Her adjustments along the way provide humor and insight into preparing for things we've not yet experienced in our own lives.

I'm thinking of doing the French route myself (starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) and have been inhaling other people's stories of the route, whether blog or book form. The writing is engaging, and both funny and touching in places. I liked that the author is willing to note her own faults as much of those of others', but noted the strengths of herself and everyone around her as well. And her love for her husband jumped off the page, which I really appreciated! About halfway through the author's time in Spain I found myself on google maps--a surprising portion of the Camino is available on street view!--and yeah, now I *really* want to go. I'm thinking spring of 2023. Fingers crossed. EDIT: I read the book and wrote this review in late fall of 2021. It is currently March of 2023. I'm flying to France on April 17th, to start in St. Jean Pied de Port. :D EDIT, number two: The Camino was awesome, and I will probably do it again in a few years, and it was fun to reread this book after doing the Camino and be able to remember so many of the places she talks about. <3

I've walked to Santiago twice, in 2016 at 65 from St. Jean and in 2019 from Le Puy and bought the book during the pandemic as I waxed nostalgic for the weeks on the road under load with beer bread and bed waiting each afternoon. I can see some of the sights again, the sunrises, the amazing stonework, the clothes drying in the afternoons, the passers by, the cultivated for centuries and still natural landscapes. She helped me again hear the news from Radio Camino, the snoring in the gites and albergues, songs on the road, and the slightly tipsy and slightly loud cafe conversations. I could smell the the morning coffee bowl, the cheeses, the pastries, the animal dropping. And she helped me remember speedy young pilgrims, poor and semi-prosperous middle age Spaniards, paths that were old when followed by Charlemagne, D'Artagnan, and Roman legionnaires, and friends, companions and acquaintancesof all ages and duration. Perhaps because of Justino's background, this is by far the most interesting and entertaining Camino story I've read. For me, it is just the right mix of her daily hiking experience along with a little historical background for context. Her subtle, sometimes self-degrading, humor is a bonus. At the end of the book she provided her daily destinations and miles walked along with a packing list which is something I wish more authors would provide. I'm in my 60's now and beginning to doubt if I will ever make the walk but after reading this book I'm still hoping.
