In Farshore nemen spelers de rol aan van leiders van een groep kolonisten die een nieuw thuis proberen op te bouwen op een mysterieus eiland. Het doel van het spel is om je kolonie te ontwikkelen door grondstoffen te verzamelen, gebouwen te conswaarren en het eiland te verkennen. Spelers beginnen met een basiskamp en breiden dit uit door grondstoffen zoals hout, steen en voedsel te verzamelen, die nodig zijn om nieuwe gebouwen te bouwen en technologieën te ontwikkelen. Elke speler moet zijn acties strategisch plannen, rekening houdend met zowel de behoeften van hun kolonie als de acties van de andere spelers, die ook strijden om controle over cruciale gebieden van het eiland. Conflicten kunnen ontstaan wanneer grondgebieden overlappen en middelen schaars worden. Het spel combineert elementen van resource management, strategische planning en onderhandeling om een rijke en competitieve spelervaring te bieden.
