Germany's blitzkrieg tactics in the early stages of WWII relied on fast, highly maneuverable vehicles. The blitzkrieg became notorious for its effectiveness across Europe, Africa, and the Eastern Front, particularly in North Africa. Leading these rapid attacks were the Wehrmacht's Aufklärungsabteilungen (reconnaissance battalions), which scouted ahead of the Panzer divisions to identify enemy positions and find safe routes for their forces.

The Sd.Kfz 222, also known as the Leichter Panzerspähwagen (light armoured reconnaissance vehicle), was a four-wheel-drive armored car produced by Horch. It was equipped with a 2cm autocannon and a co-axial MG34 machine gun. The Sd.Kfz 223, a command variant, replaced the autocannon with radio equipment and a distinctive aerial frame. These vehicles saw action on all fronts in WWII and were also used by Romanian, Bulgarian, and Nationalist Chinese forces.
