Kanstul Model 450 Eb Alto Trombone Overview

The Kanstul Model 450 Eb Alto Trombone is a compact alto trombone designed for orchestral, chamber, and historically informed repertoire where the clarity, register placement, and articulation of an Eb alto are preferred over a tenor trombone. Built by Kanstul in California, the Model 450 follows a traditional alto trombone concept with a smaller bore, responsive slide action, and a focused bell profile intended to support precise upper-register playing and transparent ensemble balance. An original Kanstul design inspired by trombones that Larry Minick used to build in Los Angeles a few decades ago.

Condition & Setup

This Kanstul Model 450 Eb Alto Trombone is used. It has been professionally serviced, set up, and play-tested by our brass technicians to confirm proper slide action, response, and mechanical function. Cosmetic wear may be present consistent with prior use, but the instrument has been evaluated for dependable musical performance.

Who the Model 450 Eb Alto Trombone Is For

The Kanstul Model 450 Eb Alto Trombone is an Eb alto trombone for advanced and professional trombonists who need a dedicated instrument for classical alto trombone repertoire. It is especially relevant for players performing Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and other orchestral literature where alto trombone can provide the correct color, tessitura, and historical proportion.

Its tonal character is centered, clear, and compact compared with a tenor trombone, with quicker response in the upper register and less physical spread in the sound. The Model 450 is distinguished by its American-built Kanstul construction and practical straight alto design, making it a focused choice for players who want a specialized alto trombone rather than a tenor-like substitute.

Common Questions About the Kanstul Model 450

Is the Kanstul Model 450 a professional alto trombone?

Yes. The Kanstul Model 450 is suitable for advanced and professional use when a dedicated Eb alto trombone is required. Its smaller bore, Eb pitch, and focused response make it appropriate for orchestral and chamber settings where alto trombone is stylistically or musically preferred.

How does an Eb alto trombone differ from a tenor trombone?

An Eb alto trombone is pitched a fourth higher than a Bb tenor trombone and is built with a smaller bore and bell. It offers a lighter, more direct sound and more efficient upper-register response, which can help the alto trombone line speak with clarity in classical repertoire.

Who should choose the Kanstul Model 450 over a modern tenor trombone?

A player should choose the Kanstul Model 450 when the music calls for the pitch, timbre, and articulation of an Eb alto trombone rather than the broader sound of a tenor trombone. It is best suited to trombonists who already have solid slide accuracy and want a dedicated alto for orchestral literature.

Works well
Color: Silver
The stainless steel caddy quality is fine, the sticker was easy to install on the inside of my stainless steel sink. I initially used the small movable arm to hang on the hooks, and it did not keep the caddy in place. Anytime it was hit, it fell off or tilted off the hooks. Customer service followed up with me on my purchase, gave me the correct instructions with a picture, and I was able to snap the caddy into the hooks. They were responsive, listened to my concerns and answered my questions, and now it works great. I would recommend this.

It doesn’t take up so much space
Color: Silver
This is perfect for my use. I did have to place the sticker on it to hold it in place. I have a Blanco sink which isn’t smooth.

Negative reviews are misleading it definitely works just fine.
Color: Silver
Noticed the only negative reviews were because the hooks would not fit and was sort of concerned about that, but I figured it might be one of those things where it’s the person’s fault not the product. Sure enough it was. The hook fits, yea you have to push it in there with a slight bit of force, but it definitely does fit. What those people don’t realize is that by design the hooks are like that to keep a firm hold onto the tray itself. I found it funny how mad people were about that when really it’s very very simple to make it work. Nice product sticks well, seems sturdy.

Good product, lousy instructions
Color: Silver, Color: Silver
This is a good product with terrible instructions. I’ve used this adhesive strip before so I know how to install the basket & how to remove the strip. To get a snug fit position one of the basket's vertical wires in the middle of one of the horizontal bars then press down hard until you hear it snap into place, it’s now snug & will not tip over. To remove the adhesive strip I used a putty knife & wiggled it underneath the strip until I had loosened & lifted enough of it to get a good grip & pull the rest off. Mine is installed on a ceramic tile back splash not in the sink so this method did not damage the tile, can't say what it would do to stainless steel. I'm a 72 y/o woman with arthritis, if I can get the adhesive off anyone can.

Works well, but very difficult to remove!
Color: Silver
Perspective: Ive had this caddy for 3 years and it has suited me well. Over time the hooks that hold the caddy in place loosened and the caddy would occasionally fall off the side of the sink wall. Not a huge deal, just a small inconvenience. Over time it started to happen more often because the plastic hooks completely lost their grip so I decided to replace it. Well it literally took me 3 days to get it off of the side of my sink. Using different tools to jimmy it off because the adhesive is sooo strong (which is a good thing, until you are looking to remove it). It took a razor blade and several bouts of goo gone to get the whole thing off as well as the leftover adhesive. The fact that it lasted for 3 years is a testament that it is a good product, but it lost several stars for the drama and pain and suffering it took to remove. I wont be buying another one.
