The right edging does something quietly transformative to a border. It draws a soft line between the cultivated and the cared-for, gives lawn-meets-bed a clean honest finish, and lifts a planting scheme from nice to resolved. This is one of those edgings — made in Norfolk by independent maker LV Bespoke, supplied in raw steel that weathers into a soft rust patina, designed to disappear into the planting as if it had always been there.

The design is a small piece of classical garden architecture in miniature: three horizontal bars running between two ball-topped uprights, in the tradition of Victorian estate railings, scaled down to a comfortable 700mm × 500mm per panel. Substantial enough to make a real visual difference, restrained enough to stay in keeping with soft cottage planting rather than competing with it.

What it's for

Garden edging earns its keep in three ways:

  • Defining the line between border and lawn, path, or gravel — visually first, but practically too. A clean edge stops planting from creeping outward and lawn from creeping inward.
  • Containing mulch and soil — particularly useful in raised borders or beds with bark, gravel, or compost mulches that otherwise migrate over time.
  • Adding a quiet decorative line through the garden — these aren't shouty pieces; they're punctuation rather than statement.

The horizontal-bar design is particularly forgiving: it suggests a boundary without blocking the eye, so plants can spill gently over and through it without losing the line. That's the magic of railing-style edging — definition that softens rather than walls off.

Where it looks loveliest

The classical bar-and-ball detail makes this edging at its best in traditional, soft cottage planting:

  • Around a herbaceous border spilling with hardy geraniums, salvias, and lady's mantle — the planting can drift gracefully through the bars without the edge being lost
  • Edging a kitchen or cutting garden where a tidy classical line sets off the productive abundance behind
  • Bordering a gravel path through planting — the rust tones harmonise beautifully with weathered gravel
  • Around a rose bed — the Victorian-railing styling and roses are old companions; this is the look they were made for
  • Defining a small lawn within a larger planting scheme — the ball tops give a sense of finish that simpler edging lacks
  • Around the base of a tree in a lawn — a small ring of bar-and-ball edging makes mowing easier and looks intentional

How to install

Beautifully simple — the kind of garden job you can finish before the kettle boils:

  • Mark the line you want to follow with a length of string or hose, particularly if you're edging a curve
  • Push each panel into prepared, moist soil — soft ground after rain or watering is much easier than baked summer earth
  • Align panels end-to-end along the run, keeping the heights consistent (a spirit level helps if the ground is uneven)
  • Firm the soil on both sides with the heel of your boot to settle each panel in

For longer runs, work out roughly how many panels you'll need beforehand — at 700mm per panel, a 5-metre border needs around 7 panels, and a 10-metre border around 14.

The rust patina

Supplied in raw steel and designed to develop a natural rust patina over time — particularly outdoors, in contact with damp soil, where the process happens beautifully. Within a few weeks it begins to take on a warm, mottled rust tone; over months and seasons it deepens and softens further. The result is edging that feels rooted in your garden rather than imposed onto it — and a lovely complement to the weathered terracotta, aged stone, and silvered timber that fills most cottage gardens.

Unlike galvanised or painted edging, rust-finish steel doesn't flake, peel, or need repainting — it simply continues to evolve. Most owners come to love it. If you'd prefer to slow the process, a clear protective wax (Renaissance Wax works well) or matte clear lacquer applied on arrival will hold off the rust considerably.

Sold per panel. For longer borders, simply order multiple panels and align them end-to-end — they're designed to run together as a continuous edging. If you're not sure how many you'll need, a quick measure of your border length in metres divided by 0.7 will give you a starting figure.

Does not spray
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 2)
Does not spray!!! This is the second set I purchased and I have had issues that I was unable to spray with 3 of the 4 bottles. Was incredibly inconvenient when we brought a new bottle on vacation and it didn't work. Company would not send a replacement - only a physical coupon. I cannot find the sunscreen in stores and the coupon only covers about half a new bottle.

Spray stops working
Size: 5 Ounce (Pack of 2)
I’ve been buying this product for awhile and keep experiencing issues. It protects your skin well but is sometimes hard to spray and half the time the nozzle stops working while there is still product in the bottle.
