The story follows the life of Tammy Tarleton (Debbie Watson), an 18-year-old spunky country girl who lives on her family's bayou houseboat (along with her Grandpa (Denver Pyle), uncle Lucius (Frank McGrath) and her cousin Cletus (Dennis Robertson) and her job as a secretary for the single wealthy plantation owner John Brent (Donald Woods) and his associate Dwayne Whitt (George Furth).
Many of the situations deal with the town’s high society Lavinia Tate (Dorothy Green) and her children Steven (David Macklin) and Gloria (Linda Marshall). Tammy’s wholesome southern charm gets in the way of Lavinia’s continually schemes to get close to her boss for the hopeful possibility of one day becoming Mrs. John Brent.
Tammy was loosely based on the three Tammy films; Tammy and the Bachelor starring Debbie Reynolds; Tammy Tell Me True; and Tammy and the Doctor both starring Sandra Dee. The films themselves were adaptations of novels by Cid Ricketts Sumner. The series was also partially influenced by other rural themed TV sitcoms such as The Beverly Hillbillies.
