Discoveries America National Parks: Grand Canyon. 2013. 50min. Bennett-Watt, DVD, $24.95 (9781604901696). First published April 8, 2013 (Booklist Online). The Grand Canyon is 18 miles wide, 1 mile deep, 277 river-miles long, and among the best-known tourist sites in the U.S. This entry in the ongoing national parks travel series, filled with panoramic views of the Grand Canyon, includes information on accommodations, nature centers, and available programs. An interviewed biologist describes the California condor reintroduction program.

Footage of the huge birds in flight is accompanied by soothing background music. Another segment includes historic footage of river guide Georgie White Clark (1911-92), the first woman to row the full length of Marble and Grand Canyons, in 1952, and scenes of whitewater rafters preparing for a river trip. Smooth voice-over narration points out landmark features at the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon. REVIEW: Video Librarian
Discoveries America National Parks: Grand Canyon. Just in time for summer vacation, this new entry in Jim and Kelly Watt's acclaimed high-definition Discoveries...America National Parks series looks at some of the most spectacular features of Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park, which-at 18 miles wide and a mile deep-offers one of the world's most stunning examples of the power of erosion, displaying a rugged beauty that attracts a nonstop stream of visitors who come to hike, climb, run the rapids of the Colorado River, or just gaze into the abyss.

Many awestruck travelers share comments here, including some who wait patiently to photograph-or simply to witness- the "magic hours" of sunrise and sunset. Wildlife is also featured, with a focus on the reintroduction of the California condor-an endangered species with a wingspan of more than nine feet, making it the largest land bird in North America.

In a brief history lesson, viewers see old black-and-white stills of Lee's Ferry, where Mormon Jacob Hamblin crossed the Colorado River on a raft in 1864; today, this is a starting point for thrill-packed rafting trips (contemporary footage shows vacationers screaming with delight on a rough-and-tumble run). Also included is archival film of guide Georgie White Clark, who in 1952 would become the first woman to row the full length of the Marble and Grand Canyons. Serving up striking visuals that make for a compelling viewing experience, this is sure to appeal to armchair travelers as well as those who are planning trips. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. "Yosemite: Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Devils Postpile and Carrizo Plain" is an eye-opening portrait of Yosemite National Park, land of gigantic, near-immortal trees, the 60-foot columnar basalt formations of Devils Postpile National Monument, and the National Monument of Carrizo Plain where one can see surface fractures of the San Andreas Fault.

"Glacier and Craters of the Moon and other National Park Service Sites and Attractions in Montana and Idaho" explores Glacier National Park and its incredible hiking and wildlife viewing options, the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in which one can witness three types of pahoehoe lava with islets of cinder cones and sagebrush, and much more. My dog loves this toy!
Color: Green
I was NOT expecting my dog to like this toy, but she loves it! The legs are stretchy and the body vibrates. The battery lasts about a month.

Great interactive toy. Worth the price.
Color: Blue
Our Lab absolutely loves it. She throws it all over the house. It’s so fun to watch her play with it. It’s by far her favorite toy right now. It’s easy to charge and came with charging cable. It has a button to turn off and on and a couple different speeds. My parents got her a different one for Christmas and since she loved it so much we decided to get her another one. It’s pretty durable too. She normally rips through toys pretty quickly and both of the ones she has are still in good shape. No rips or tears. She hasn’t tried just chewing on it like she does her squeaky toys. She just throws it all around the house and chases it.

Fun, enticing dog toy. As stated in description it won’t hold up for aggressive chewers
Color: Blue
Rating this based on description. My dog loved this toy. It was smaller than I had pictured in my head, but that was on me. I did read the description ahead of time, which clearly states this is not for aggressive chewers. My dog is trained not to rip toys apart so I wanted to give this a shot, but i guess just her jaw strength and teeth were too much. She carried it everywhere. I turned it on periodically. The movements are small, but enough for her to be captivated with the toy. It did mostly survive for about a day before I needed to take it away due to the Velcro opening. Once it started to pull apart she did chew a piece of the Velcro off. It might be helpful with a flap over design covering the Velcro. I have a singing Santa decoration like this where the Velcro is covered up and I have to pull it back a little to get to the Velcro opening. The gaps on the sides of the closure are a bit to large making it tempt my dog to pull and open it up. I wish there was a more durable option that could hold up to aggressive chewers, but this product was clear about that in the description. I think the opening to the batteries could use some improvement. Granted I do not have the perfect answer to fix this, but I am also not a toy designer.

My Dog Went Crazy Over This Electric Octopus Toy!
Color: Blue
I was worried sick my fur kid would be super bored home alone while I work, so when I stumbled on this electric octopus toy, I grabbed it right away—and it’s way better than I expected! Let’s start with the quality: the plush fabric feels soft and squishy but so sturdy. It’s not the cheap kind that sheds fur if you tug it, and the stitches are nice and neat. My dog loves chewing on toys, and he’s been playing with this for almost two weeks now—no pilling, no fraying. The durability’s seriously on point. Using it is totally hassle-free, too. It was already charged right out of the box—I just pressed the little button on the side, and it started moving. It has two modes: slow mode makes the octopus wiggle gently, like it’s crawling slowly. Fast mode? It wiggles and scurries around, and the speed’s perfect—my dog can keep up but still has to work a little. When he first saw it, he circled it three times, sniffed it, then backed up right away. He stared at it all cautious, even hid under the couch to spy on it for a bit. That little look was so funny and cute, I couldn’t stop laughing. Now they’re total best buds! Every morning, as soon as I turn the toy on, he runs over with his little bed in his mouth and plops down next to it, waiting for it to move. Sometimes the octopus crawls under the table, and he’ll paw at it for ages. If he can’t reach it, he’ll look up and bark at me like, “Hey, help me get it!” Watching him chase it around, jumping to pounce—his tail wags like a little flag the whole time. It makes the house feel so much livelier, and I don’t have to stress about him being lonely when he’s home alone anymore. Quick tips for all you fellow pet parents: First, the toy makes a tiny motor hum when it moves. It’s not loud, but if your dog’s super skittish or scared of small noises, give him a few days to get used to it. Second, always keep an eye on him while he plays. Mine tried to bite off one of the octopus’s tentacles once—I stopped him just in time. The toy has a motor inside, so you gotta make sure he doesn’t swallow any small parts. Oh, and the plush cover zips off! If it gets dirty, just throw it in warm water, wash it, and once it’s dry, it looks good as new. Super easy to clean. Overall, this electric octopus toy’s the best pet buy I’ve made lately. Great quality, no hassle to use, and it keeps my dog entertained for hours. Every time I see my fur kid’s happy little face while he plays, I think, “Man, this was totally worth the money.” Def recommend it to anyone who wants a fun little buddy for their dog!
