Книга з головою занурює в драматичний період української історії від початку повстання Хмельницького в 1648 році до 1720-х, часів гетьмана Скоропадського. Невигадані ігри престолів Козацької доби.

Видання складається з історичного нарису “Часи Ранньої Гетьманщини, Київ і Київщина” та збірника документів “Писемна спадщина київського справочинства другої половини ХVII – першої чверті XVIII ст.”. Нарис покликаний дати детальніше уявлення, що собою представляла історична доба, до якої належать документи збірника.

Міських документів цього періоду збереглося небагато, оскільки переважна більшість з них загинула під час пожеж київської ратуші у 1718 і 1811 рр. Ще менше залишилося документів тих часів, що походять з Київщини, внаслідок тотального її знищення. Міські документи переважно містять важливу інформацію про організацію видачі у Києві дозвільних документів купцям та іншим категоріям населення (українцям та іноземцям), відображаючи торгово-економічні зв’язки киян і решти українців з іншими країнами. Менша частка документів стосується сфери земельної власності.

Тексти супроводжуються науково-довідковим апаратом: примітки, іменний і географічний покажчики, словник застарілих і маловживаних слів та ін.

В якості окремих додатків книга містить сфрагістичну колекцію відбитків печаток Київщини 17-18 століть та історико-художні реконструкції вигляду жителів краю — козаків, міщан, посполитих селян, купців тощо.
