The Abel SDF (Sealed Drag Fresh) 4/5 is the smaller, lighter sibling of the award-winning SDF platform. Fly Fisherman Magazine's Best New Freshwater Reel for 2018 and Best of Show at the 2017 ICAST/IFTD trade show, the SDF was built after Abel moved their operation here to Colorado. The 4/5 size scales the platform down for 4-weight and 5-weight trout rods, weighing only 5.02 ounces with a 3.26-inch spool diameter that matches up perfectly with light-tippet, delicate-presentation fishing on small streams, technical tailwaters, and tight headwaters.

This configuration is the all-black version: Solid Glossy Black frame, matching Glossy Black drag knob, and a hand-finished ebony wood handle. No graphics, no contrast. It is the quietest aesthetic Abel offers on the SDF and the one most often picked by the angler who wants a premium reel that does not announce itself. The glossy finish picks up light just enough to look intentional, and the dark wood handle warms the package up without breaking the monochrome.

Under the surface, the SDF runs the same stainless steel and carbon fluoropolymer sealed drag system Abel uses on their saltwater reels. Drag pressure ranges from zero to 10 pounds with an adjustment range almost three times greater than the original SD, and the system has virtually zero startup inertia, so a 16-inch brown that turns and runs on 6X tippet hits a smooth, predictable resistance instead of a jolt. The large arbor picks up line faster and cuts down on memory in cold weather.

The 4/5 holds a 4-weight line plus 90 yards of 20-pound backing, or a 5-weight line plus 75 yards of 20-pound backing.
