By: Ryan Lugalia-Hollon, Daniel CooperA narrative-driven exploration of policing and the punishment of disadvantage in Chicago, and a new vision for repairing urban neighborhoods
For people of color who live in segregated urban neighborhoods, surviving crime and violence is a generational reality. As violence in cities like New York and Los Angeles has fallen in recent years, in many Chicago communities, it has continued at alarming rates. Meanwhile, residents of these same communities have endured decades of some of the highest rates of arrest, incarceration, and police abuse in the nation.
The War on Neighborhoods argues that these trends are connected. Crime in Chicago, as in many other US cities, has been fueled by a broken approach to public safety in disadvantaged neighborhoods. For nearly forty years, public leaders have attempted to create peace through punishment, misinvesting billions of dollars toward the suppression of crime, largely into a small subset of neighborhoods on the city’s West and South Sides. Meanwhile, these neighborhoods have struggled to sustain investments into basic needs such as jobs, housing, education, and mental healthcare.
When the main investment in a community is policing and incarceration, rather than human and community development, that amounts to a “war on neighborhoods,” which ultimately furthers poverty and disadvantage. Longtime Chicago scholars Ryan Lugalia-Hollon and Daniel Cooper tell the story of one of those communities, a neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side that is emblematic of many majority-black neighborhoods in US cities. Sharing both rigorous data and powerful stories, the authors explain why punishment will never create peace and why we must rethink the ways that public dollars are invested into making places safe.
The War on Neighborhoods makes the case for a revolutionary reformation of our public-safety model that focuses on shoring up neighborhood institutions and addressing the effects of trauma and poverty. The authors call for a profound transformation in how we think about investing in urban communities—away from the perverse misinvestment of policing and incarceration and toward a model that invests in human and community development.

Great product before they dry up
Great smelling product, that performs and protects and a high level. It left my car looking and smelling good with its unique scent and formula. I usually keep these inside my glove box since they’re so compact I can easily get the container and wipe when needed. The wipes retain its moisture fairly decently. I find that if I don’t use all of the wipes within a 2-3 month time frame, they will dry up and be no good. As long as you use them up before that it’s a nice buy for your vehicle.

Smells good and conditions dash well
Dust is sticking to my dash more but that’s to be expected I think. My kid also starting trying to clean the back windows with them and they streaked them up, so not for windows. Seals tight, seems like they will last a while.

Love that scent
I have been using Maguiar’s products for decades. I purchased these wipes shortly after I used one of their spray on detailing products in my garage. In that setting, the detail spray scent was addictive…almost like a tropical suntan lotion. Normally, I am not much on scents that can be overwhelming…like plug in house products or those things sit in your vehicle vents… they tend to be too strong and/or too pervasive. But in a garage, and diluted with the surrounding air…that detailing product scent was luscious, just enough, not too much. That scent prompted me to search online for “Maguiar’s wax scent” and I found some user forums discussing this topic. Lots of people think similar things and compare various other products. I learned that Maguiar’s recognized the marketing importance of scent in their products a while back, but I had never really noticed it, although it has always been my go to product line for wax and detailing products. This encouraged me to order some of these wipes for cleaning interior surfaces.
I was not disappointed! The new car scent is just enough “new plastic” mixed with some sweetness of those other signature tropical notes to add a nice touch to the cleaning activity, while being just lightly persistent enough to make you notice that scent when you get into a freshly cleaned vehicle. I would not want that same scent to be too strong or persistent, and it is not. Additionally, as a cleaning product, it works very well. The dashboard plastics end up more matte than glossy with application, something else I appreciate. I am not a fan of super shiny or glossy.
Thanks for a great product Maguiars!

Not a clean wipe but smells good
Leaves behind a thick residue and makes a weird texture/coat on your interior
