About the Author

Liz Flanagan is an award-winning author who writes for children and young adults. Her books include Dragon Daughter, Rise of the Shadow Dragons and Eden Summer (nominated for the Carnegie Medal).

About the Illustrator

Joe Todd-Stanton grew up in Brighton and received a first-class degree in Illustration from UWE Bristol. He is the author and illustrator of The Secret of Black Rock (Flying Eye Books), which won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2018 (illustrated category) and was longlisted for the 2018 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.

this book is kinda mediocre. the first story was amazing. great art, great story, and great dialogue. very cool perspective on what seems like the covenants first encounter with the flood. the dialogue-less one about sgt johnson surviving in a flood infested area was pretty good too. the armor testing story wasn’t bad but kinda felt like a waste of time. and the last one had such terrible art i couldn’t even read it. but i also enjoyed reading the “behind the scenes” author’s notes before and after each story.

I bought this to see the story about the half-jaw white elite, one of my favorite characters. In that regard it was fantastic. That story and its art are epic. The next two stories were HORRENDOUS. The middle two stories truly look like they were drawn by talented 8th graders. The dialogue is cringe for the second story and the third story is wordless. There are also resolution issues throughout. Pictures don’t really get across just how UGLY the middle two stories are. The fourth and last story looks like an actual professional artist did it, but I’m too traumatized to try to read it. The foreword is insufferable and irrelevant and the end of the book is filled with fan art that is not quite charming in a book I paid money for.
