Fouquieria columnaris is a dramatic, sculptural desert plant commonly known as the boojum tree, recognized for its tall, tapering, column-like trunk that can appear almost otherworldly. Native to arid regions of Baja California, it features sparse, spiny branches with small leaves that emerge after rainfall, making it exceptionally well-adapted to extreme drought conditions. This slow-growing plant thrives in full sun with excellent drainage and minimal watering, making it ideal for xeriscapes or desert-themed collections. While it is not known to be highly toxic, its sharp spines and lack of clear pet-safety data mean it is not considered plant-friendly, so it’s best kept away from pets and high-traffic areas.
