A scarce, early souvenir-program for Katherine Dunham’s production of Bal Nègre, providing an overview of Dunham’s stunning career, oeuvre and her dance school.

African-American dancer, choreographer, anthropologist and activist Katherine Dunham (1909–2006) enjoyed one of the most successful dance careers of the 20th century. Featuring a captivating illustration of Dunham on the cover with a white dress billowing in the air and hands above her head, this program was published for Dunham’s production Bal Nègre, which opened at New York’s Belasco Theater in 1946 and played at the Geary Theater, San Francisco in 1948. Following Tropical Revue—“which scored a sensation the length and breadth of the U.S. and Canada”—Bal Nègre is here described as “the latest in a brilliant succession of theatrical productions conceived and directed by Miss Dunham.”

This program presents a glowing biographical sketch of Dunham, an overview of her works, and images of such performances as “Shore Excursion”; “Bahiana”; “Mexican Rhumba”; “Congo Paillette, a “corn-sorting ritual”; “Rites de Passage”; “The Cakewalk”; “Flaming Youth” and so on—many of these dances deriving from different cultures. Many images feature Dunham herself; in one she lies across a grand-piano while a pianist tickles the ivories. The section “Primitive Rhythms” spells out “a new dance vocabulary” that Dunham purveyed through her study of the dances of “primitive” cultures. One section entitled, “The Company Rehearses” features images of Dunham’s company in rehearsal and identifies the members of company’s three divisions: Company dance members, Sans Souci Singers, and Drummers. Featured as well is the company’s resident composer-conductor, Gilberto Valdes. The program concludes with an overview of the Dunham School of Dance and Theatre, which features several shots from Dunham’s drama, percussion, and “primitive technique” courses as well as classes for children.

Dubbed the “matriarch and queen mother of black dance,” Dunham won acclaim for her innovative interpretations of ritualistic and ethnic dances which she based on her research of black culture. At the apogee of her career during the 1940s and ‘50s, she achieved great success throughout Europe, Latin America and the U.S. with her own all-black Katherine Dunham Dance Co., which she directed for nearly three decades. The company constituted the sole self-supported black American dance troupe of its day. Over her long career, Dunham choreographed over ninety individual dances; made important contributions to the field of dance anthropology, and innovated African-American modern dance. She also choreographed and starred in dance sequences in various movies and was the recipient of numerous awards. Many of her students trained at her Chicago and New York studios went on to become notable figures in the field of modern dance.

WorldCat records 5 copies, two of which are held outside of the U.S.

A lovely souvenir-program for a Katherine Dunham performance, produced early in her remarkable career.

Beware of the Top Button!!😁
Style: M705
A smooth but weighted feel on a mouse pad. I have mice that move with a much lighter touch, but this is great for the computer I use with my main TV screen. Beware of the top damnable button, the one just before the scroll wheel. It turns off the clicky graduations you wheel as you roll the scroll wheel with your fingertip. When used it unleashes a whirling dervish of a gremlin, your screen will continue to scroll after you want it to stop. Sometimes it will start on its own! Incantations, voodoo, chick bones, curses and magic wands have no effect. Yelling seems to make it worse. There is no other cure other than to push the top button from Hades again. Clicks from the two main buttons are easily audible but not obnoxious. The side buttons for screen forward & back work very well also. This is my second one of these, the first stopped moving smoothly on a pad, no amount of polishing seemed to help so I retired it.

Important Info for Connecting Replacement Mouse
Style: M705
I purchased the MK705 mouse to replace the same model that had simply worn out after over 13 years of faithful service. The MK700/710 Logitech keyboard is still going strong, albeit with a few worn keys. I did however run into an issue when installing the new mouse. At first I left the old unifying receiver that came with the old mouse plugged into a usb port. I installed the batteries in the new mouse, turned it on, and found that it would not work. I figured it needed the new unifying receiver, so I turned off the keyboard and mouse and plugged the new receiver into the same USB port. The new mouse then worked but the keyboard would not. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I phoned Logitech support. The gentleman I spoke with walked me through the connection process, which was done on their website "logiwebconnect.com". Should you run into the same issue, the process is simple. You probably won't need any help from tech support, but if you do, they were easy to get in touch with.

Still the champ
Style: M705
Love it!!! Got this originally when it first came out. The people who talk about the scroll wheel are not very smart. It has a button to switch from hyper to regular scrolling. I do use a mouse pad. So it moves fine. Feels very comfortable in your hand. Obviously this is not for gaming. Great mouse for your home office computer.

Dependable, Reliable

As advertised. Logitech, best mouse for your hard-earned cheddar! It’s not that the (years) old Logitech mouse failed in any operational way, it just got that gummy, sticky surface texture that’s impossible to remove. While shopping for a replacement I noticed an off-brand mouse/keyboard combo and thought, “hey, 2 for 1”…mistake. All was well for about three weeks, long enough that when the gremlins arrived I didn’t immediately associate the new hardware. For the purposes of this discussion, gentle reader, know that I run legacy (what I affectionately refer to as, “Lazarus”) builds. Rigs that started life running Windows Vista/7, died, and that now, resurrected, run 10 and 11, and all that that implies. So, when a mouse started stuttering, of course I thought it was a gremlin in the machine, right? I spent more days than I am comfortable sharing with you pouring over processes and background apps, and registry trims…before Accam’s Razor suggested I eliminate the mouse as a variable. Changing the battery was ineffective, but when I swapped in the ooold Logitech…Yahtzee/Bingo/Booyah…smooth and precise…butter! All I needed was a new Logitech mouse. So, if you’re here you likely are having mouse issues of your own, or you just need one that works…this is it! 😉
