Juan Diego was a humble man native to Mexico in the early 1500s. Raised surrounded by pagan Aztec influences, Juan Diego stood out as one with great religious belief and deep respect for the Virgin Mary. Franciscan missionaries aided his and his wife's conversion, and Juan Diego lived his days as a simple, devout Catholic.
The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego several times asking him to appeal to the bishop that a chapel be built on Tepayac Hill in her honor. Juan Diego went about the request, delivering signs from the Virgin Mary to convince the bishop of Mary's request. The final such sign was for Juan Diego to gather miraculous roses from the hillside to take to the bishop. He gathered the flowers in his tilma (a cloak-like garment worn over the body) and let them loose on the floor in the bishop's presence. Imprinted on the tilma was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which moved the bishop to belief and Mary's request was granted. Thus, the bishop saw her face, then he was a believer! The same tilma remains on display in the basilica in Mexico city, with several miracles attributed to it.
