As your firewood begins to burn, cold air is drawn in the holes around the bottom of the firepit. This is the primary burn. It is normal for some smoke to be generated at this stage.
But then the secondary burn kicks in to take care of the smoke! The convection process also draws air up between the walls of the firepit, superheating it as it rises. It then escapes through the inner vent holes at the top of the firepit where it reburns the smoke.
The entire process continues providing an efficient burn of the firewood, virtually eliminating the nuisance caused by smoke. Enjoy the warmth of the fire and the beauty of the flames without watering eyes or smelly clothing.
