2008 Caldecott Medal winnerThe groundbreaking debut novel from bookmaking pioneer, Brian Selznick
Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks--like the gears of the clocks he keeps--with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo's undercover life and his most precious secret are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo's dead father form the backbone of this intricate, tender, and spellbinding mystery.
With 284 pages of original drawings and combining elements of picture book, graphic novel, and film, Brian Selznick breaks open the novel form to create an entirely new reading experience. Here is a stunning cinematic tour de force from a boldly innovative storyteller and artist.

So good
Format: Kindle
Read this for the Trans Rights Readathon, and it's so good. While it's not an explicitly "trans" narrative, it is clearly about the often restrictive and even harmful nature of enforcing gender roles. Kids know what they like, be it sports or art or magic or all of it; it's adults, like Aster's entire family and culture, who have created and clung to dividing kids between boy things and girl things.
The art is perfect for this story, and very dynamic. Every character is different and recognizable, even in different forms.
One of my favorites.

relatable
Format: Paperback
The first part of Witch Boy is defintely our favorite!!! My daughter loved the story of bullying inside a family and how the character found support outside. She quotes the book whenever we encounter a person who feels "different" or not as they’re supposed to be, or not following societal expectations.

Great for all ages
Format: Hardcover
The first time I read this book was when I was student teaching. I was going through a time of change in my life and this book really hit me in my feelings. I started to tear up! I love this book so much that I bought my own personal copy of this book in 2016 and read it to my students every year. It is by far my favorite children's book.

Terrific seasonal book that can be read year-round
Format: Hardcover
I always love a seasonal book that can be read year-round, and much like Sweep, Little Tree is a wonderful fall book that isn’t so fall-themed it can only be read in September and October. A story of change, growing up, and letting go, a story of encouraging friends through words, presence, and patience, Little Tree will please children and adults alike! Ages 5-8.
