A fascinating tour of cities that have been lost to history, from the Neolithic period up to the late Roman Empire, that offers a fresh new perspective on the roots of urban life. The ruins of ancient Athens, Luxor and Rome are familiar cornerstones of world history, visited by travellers from across the globe. But what about the cities that have dropped off the map _" that have been submerged under water, or swallowed up by the sands of time? Where are they, and what can they tell us about our past? In this compendium of forgotten cities, Philip Matyszak explores the trials, tribulations and triumphs they faced, revealing how people have embarked on the shared endeavour of living together since we first settled down 12,000 years ago. Illustrated throughout with important artefacts, ruins and maps, Lost Cities of the Ancient World brings to life the sites and settlements across Europe, the Middle East and beyond that time forgot, from the sunken city of Ropotamo in the Black Sea to the deep cave dwellings of Derinkuyu in Turkey. Some have survived only in ancient literature, such as the lost city of Zoar by the Dead Sea, known from the Bible but not yet found. Others have been located, allowing archaeologists to trace their changing fortunes through centuries of occupation. Matyszak reveals a dynamic network of peoples and cultures who fought and traded between themselves, exchanging inventions, ideas and philosophies, with the result that peoples as far apart as AatalhAyAk in Turkey and Skara Brae in the Orkney islands in Scotland shared much of a common heritage. By examining the motivations that first drew people to gather and settle together, as well as the challenges that led to their cities_T abandonment, this visually striking and often surprising book offers us a fresh perspective on our urban origins.

It Works
This works fine. Good size. Good enough cord length. Does what a power strip should do.

Great for multiple adapters
Color: Black, Size: 8 Outlet, Style: Outlets Only
One of the common flaws of single width strips is the inability to accommodate more than 1 adapter unless you want to waste the sockets as the adapter obstructs/covers the adjacent sockets. This one has 2 rows with sockets at 90 degrees. As such, adapters face outward and do not obstruct adjacent sockets. Well made and sturdy, typical of APC quality. Hopefully the surge protection won't be tested but gives you peace of mind to know that all plugged in devices are protected. I have it mounted under my office desk using the mounting holes at the back. Great value for the money.

A household staple
Style: Data/Line Protection - 12 ft
I use this power strip for both my computer and entertainment setup, and it has been very reliable. The seven outlets give me enough room for everything without having to use multiple strips. The cord is long enough to reach the wall easily while keeping things neat. It sits flat on the floor and does not tip over when everything is plugged in. The layout of the outlets makes it easy to plug in larger adapters without blocking others. It has already gotten a lot of use and should give me plenty more for years to come.

Perfect!
Style: Data/Line Protection - 6 ft
I somehow didn't notice it had phone jacks on the end of it before I ordered, but this was the only/cheapest option I could find that had a flat plug, and a 6 foot cord, and was a surge protector, AND had indicator lights for protection at least (this additonally has a light for ungrounded). I feel like, what's the point in having a surge protector if it can't tell you whether it's protecting you or not? I needed the flat plug to fit behind a door that remains open fully and has my outlet behind it as a result. Perfect. I don't and probably will never have a use for the phone jacks. It came with a sticker over them which I will just leave for now. But this fit the bill of all other criteria. I guess the 5th criteria was a "known brand" - I didn't want some cheap "travel surge protector" by an unknown company. Belkin, Tripp Lite, APC...don't risk your expensive electronics. I also got a few of the Amazon Basics ones to put around the house and replace the power taps we were using. But they don't have flat plugs.
