DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is a purpose-designed on-wall mounting frame from DALI (Struer, Denmark), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Engineered specifically for the DALI Phantom S-280 in-wall loudspeaker, the OW Frame S-280 allows the S-280 to be deployed as a fully on-wall speaker system without requiring any wall cutouts. The frame mounts to any wall type, accommodates wall thicknesses from 10 mm to 70 mm, and accepts the Phantom S-280 speaker in both vertical Left/Right stereo orientation and horizontal vocal centre-channel orientation. With a mounting depth of 103 mm and a white finish that integrates discreetly into any room, the OW Frame S-280 is the correct solution for installations where wall penetration is not possible, such as rental properties, heritage buildings, or rooms with concealed services behind the wall surface.

On-Wall Installation Without Wall Cutouts

The DALI Phantom S-series in-wall speakers are designed for flush in-wall installation, but project constraints frequently make wall penetration impractical or impossible. Rental agreements, listed building restrictions, concrete and masonry walls, walls with dense insulation or concealed pipework, and post-construction installations where re-plastering is undesirable all present conditions where a traditional in-wall approach cannot be used. The OW Frame S-280 resolves this by providing a rigid on-wall enclosure that houses the Phantom S-280 speaker against the wall surface, using the dogleg clamping system to secure the speaker within the frame in the same way it would be secured in a wall cutout. The frame's internal geometry maintains the correct mounting depth of 103 mm for the Phantom S-series, preserving the acoustic conditions the S-280 is engineered to operate within.

Flexible Orientation and Universal Wall Compatibility

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 supports two installation orientations to accommodate the full range of home cinema and stereo deployment scenarios. In standard Left/Right vertical mode, the frame positions the S-280 as a full-range stereo or surround speaker in portrait orientation. In vocal horizontal mode, the frame rotates the S-280 to landscape orientation for use as a centre channel speaker in a home cinema system, aligning the drivers for optimal horizontal dispersion across the primary seating row. Cable entry inlets are provided on all four sides of the frame, giving the installer full flexibility in routing speaker cables regardless of wall construction type or cable entry point. Fine adjustment of the S-280's position within the frame is available to ensure a precise geometrical fit after mounting.

Key Features

  • No Wall Cutout Required: The OW Frame S-280 mounts entirely on the wall surface, allowing the DALI Phantom S-280 to be installed in any room without penetrating the wall, preserving wall integrity in rental, heritage, and post-construction scenarios.
  • Compatible with DALI Phantom S-280: Designed and dimensioned specifically for the Phantom S-280 in-wall loudspeaker, maintaining the correct 103 mm mounting depth and dogleg clamping installation method.
  • Dual Orientation Support: Installs in vertical Left/Right stereo mode or horizontal vocal centre-channel mode, with cable entry inlets on all four frame sides for flexible wiring in either orientation.
  • Universal Wall Compatibility: Mounts to any wall type including plasterboard, masonry, concrete, and timber stud construction, accommodating wall thicknesses from 10 mm to 70 mm within the dogleg span range.
  • Fine Position Adjustment: The S-280 speaker position within the frame can be fine-tuned after mounting to achieve a precise geometrical and acoustic fit.
  • White Finish: A neutral white surface integrates discreetly into any room interior and accepts paint for a custom colour match to wall finishes.
  • Robust Construction: At 36.5 kg including grille, the OW Frame S-280 is built to the structural standard required to safely support and acoustically house the Phantom S-280 speaker against the wall surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280?

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is a purpose-built on-wall mounting frame from DALI (Struer, Denmark) designed specifically for the DALI Phantom S-280 in-wall loudspeaker. It enables the Phantom S-280 to be installed as an on-wall speaker without any wall cutouts, mounts to any wall type with thicknesses from 10 mm to 70 mm, and supports both vertical stereo and horizontal centre-channel orientations. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada, and weighs 36.5 kg including the grille.

Do I need to cut into the wall to use the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280?

No, the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is specifically designed to eliminate the need for wall cutouts. The entire frame mounts on the wall surface, and the Phantom S-280 speaker is installed into the frame using the standard dogleg clamping system. This makes it the correct solution for installations in rental properties where wall modifications are prohibited, heritage or listed buildings, rooms with masonry or concrete walls, and any project where post-construction access behind the wall surface is unavailable.

How does the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 compare to other on-wall speaker frame solutions?

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is a manufacturer-designed accessory engineered in conjunction with the Phantom S-280 speaker, ensuring dimensional accuracy, correct mounting depth, and preserved acoustic performance that aftermarket or custom fabricated on-wall frames cannot guarantee. Competing high-end in-wall speaker brands such as Sonance, Focal, and Monitor Audio offer some on-wall frame options for their in-wall ranges, but none are designed to integrate with DALI's Phantom S-series dogleg clamping system or to maintain the specific 103 mm mounting depth that the Phantom S-280 requires for optimal performance. The OW Frame S-280 is the only frame solution endorsed and dimensioned by DALI for this speaker.

Can the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 be used in horizontal orientation for a centre channel?

Yes, the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 supports horizontal vocal mode installation for use of the Phantom S-280 as a centre channel speaker in a home cinema system. In horizontal orientation the drivers are aligned laterally, improving horizontal dispersion across the primary seating row for clear dialogue and centre channel reproduction. Cable entry inlets on all four sides of the frame ensure that speaker cable can be routed neatly from the wall regardless of whether the frame is mounted in vertical or horizontal orientation.

What wall types is the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 compatible with?

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is compatible with any wall type, including plasterboard and drywall stud construction, solid masonry and brick walls, concrete walls, and timber-clad wall surfaces. The frame's dogleg clamping system accommodates wall thicknesses from 10 mm to 70 mm. For wall types where standard fixings are insufficient to support the 36.5 kg combined weight of the frame and Phantom S-280 speaker, appropriate wall anchors or through-bolts rated for the total load should be used. A qualified installer should assess the wall substrate and specify appropriate fixings before mounting.

Where can I buy the DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 in Toronto or Canada?

The DALI Phantom OW Frame S-280 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised DALI dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound serves customers across the Greater Toronto Area and ships throughout Canada. For complete Phantom S-280 on-wall installations, Vinyl Sound can advise on the full system configuration including the Phantom S-280 speaker, OW Frame, and compatible DALI CI amplification.

Can the DALI Phantom OW Frame be used with other Phantom S-series speakers?

The OW Frame range includes three models matched to specific Phantom S-series speakers: the OW Frame S-80 for the Phantom S-80, the OW Frame S-180 for the Phantom S-180, and the OW Frame S-280 for the Phantom S-280. Each frame is dimensioned specifically for its matched speaker and is not interchangeable between models. The OW Frame range also includes compatible frames for the DALI Phantom M-series in-wall speakers, with separate models for the M-250, M-375, and M-675. Vinyl Sound can advise on the correct OW Frame model for any Phantom S-series or M-series speaker in a specific installation.

Wish I invested in the Playstation 5 sooner
Style: PS5 Disc, Configuration: Console only
Before buying this I had the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X; however, after buying the Playstation 5 I am blown away right out of the box. The Series X and PS5 are both 4K next generation systems, and though the Series X has the 12 teraflops graphics processing the PS5 looked way batter on my 4K TV. I also like the added functionality of the controller adding to the gaming experience with the touch pad, microphone, and gyroscopic motion control. The console is even turns on automatically by changing TV to the system's HDMI input and puts the TV into gaming mode. That is something the Series X and Switch 2 of course never have done. One down side is the system is notorious for not supporting audio cds which going back the original Playstation in 1994 the brand was always able to support. Plus if you get a cd stuck in the disk drive like what I did recently Sony made it possible to remove the disk without destroying you console in a few easy to follow steps. That saves gamers alot of money in repairs if something like that were to ever occur which is a well thought out solution. With former Xbox exclusives moving to the Playstation 5 I highly recommend adding this system to your collection.

Quality Thumping Boombox
Color: Black, Color: Black
I've been a longtime user of JBL products, but the Boombox has been my favorite speaker in their entire lineup. The built in handle, waterproof design, and fantastic battery life are what drew me to it in the first place. I owned the original Boombox for nearly 8 years. It survived dozens of camping trips in extreme heat, and was tested by FL beach trips, one of which ended in a violent rainstorm. It never failed me and could hold up to any abuse, which is why I have no problems recommending their Boombox lineup to anyone. My excitement for the Boombox 4 grew when I found out it would use an easily replaceable battery, simply by popping off the bottom cover. I had to replace the internal battery of my BB1 after 7.5 years, and it was a terrible experience that took around two hours, and was very frustrating at times. I told myself I would never buy another Bluetooth speaker that didn't have a hot-swap style battery compartment. I'm happy to see that the new speaker lineup does this. SPECS The new JBL Boombox 4 has significantly more power than the original model from 8 years ago. We're talking a jump from 40 watts to 200 RMS watts on battery power. That, combined with the larger drivers let me know that I was in for quite an upgrade. If you already have the 3rd gen BB3, I would think this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you, but coming from the OG BB1 it most certainly was for me! The ports on the rear flip cover are power and USB Type C. APPEARANCE After unboxing the new Boombox 4 I could tell it was a bit larger than the old Boombox 1, but not by much. I'm happy to see JBL go back to a handle that appears to be a part of the speaker, instead of looking like it was thrown on as an add-on, like that of the Boombox 3's handle. It's also comfortable to hold, and the weight distribution of this speaker is spot-on. I can't tell that this new speaker is 1.5 pounds heavier than the BB1. Overall it's a very good looking speaker. The pictures don't do it much justice. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship. INDOOR LISTENING My initial listening experience with the new BB4 was ear-to-ear grin worthy. I immediately realized this upgrade was legit! There's so much more lower end grunt. While playing indoors at lower volumes, I found that for certain music genres I really appreciated the low-end bass boost mode. It provides the thump you crave, even at low levels. As you raise the volume up to anything over half, I find the bass boost unnecessary, and perhaps even a bit overpowering. That's likely subjective to each persons personal tastes, as well as music genres. It's nice to have the option to use it when you want it. OUTDOOR LISTENING My OG BB1 was my favorite go-to speaker for outdoor Bluetooth music sessions, and this one excels even more at that. The BB4 has significantly more power on offer, so it's easier to fill any space with fantastic sounding music. With our modest sized corner lot, I find that keeping its volume around the 50% point is plenty to fill our yard with great sound, while not being distracting to any neighbors who may be around outdoors. What impressed me most with the new speaker is how much further and clearer both the highs and low frequencies come through. With the BB1, once I walked away more than 20 feet the bass really fell off and wasn't too noticeable, but with the BB4 I can still hear the low notes from that distance. I'm truly impressed at what the BB4 can do as an outdoor speaker. To respect my neighbors, I didn't run the Boombox 4 at maximum output, but for the brief time I had it up around 80% it was obvious that this speaker is plenty loud for most people. AURACAST Next I paired the Boombox 4 with my PartyBox 520, using Auracast. I turned on both speakers, started playing music from one, then hit the Auracast button on each. Within 5-8 seconds they paired up and were in sync with each other. Obviously pairing a speaker like the Boombox 4 along with a much larger one like the Partybox 520 is going to create a situation where you mostly hear the larger speaker. This leads me to the decision that the best way to utilize a setup like this is to run one indoors and the other outside. For a nice sized party, the Boombox would serve well indoors and the PartyBox would be perfect outside. CONS If I had to knock JBL for anything with the new BB4, it would be their decision to omit the 3.5mm aux port. This was a feature all the previous models had. I know there's a USB Type C port for lossless audio playback, but it doesn't work with a Type C to 3.5mm aux adapter. I enjoy projector movie and game nights, and I used my BB1 for the audio when viewing content with the projector by way of a simple aux cable. I did a bit of research and discovered that my Google Chromecast has Bluetooth audio playback available, but not the Roku streaming stick that I've always used for the projector. I was able to connect the Boombox 4 to my Chromecast and use it to play the audio, so I'm thankful that works! Still would have loved a 3.5mm aux port. SUMMARY JBL continues to impress with their newer lineup of speakers. As bittersweet as it was to let it go, I'm happy to be rid of the Boombox 1, as the Boombox 4 is an amazing upgrade in nearly every way. I won't have to worry about complex battery swaps in the future, which is probably the main reason I went for the upgrade. I'm happy with the extra power this speaker puts out. For anyone looking for an all-purpose, outdoor Bluetooth speaker, this is the one! No need to worry about water or dust interrupting your music sessions. Stop thinking about buying a Boombox 4 and just pull the trigger!

Perfection.
Color: Black
HANDS DOWN THE BEST BLUETOOTH SPEAKER ON THE MARKET. I have bought pretty much every BT speaker on the market (obsessed). I'm an audiophile and my main system is worth 10s of thousands. I had multiple jbls, bose, and a whole slew of different brands i dont care to list. I gave away most of them to justify buying new toys (my friends love it lol). I am not giving this thing away EVER. All my previous complaints have been addressed. Replaceable battery, stable base, lighter, smaller and double the output. For indoors i use a custom EQ to tame the bass. Because it is RIDICULOUS (alot of overhead!). I crank up the treble to sharpen it up and I find that 30% volume will fill most indoor spaces with excellent, long playtime and sharp music while barely trying! It has plenty of overhead to deliver excellent volume and presence for the beach and any outdoor event up to 60 people. This is the perfect setup. Need more coverage? order a second one for stereo (i will). This is the end game Bluetooth speaker. Everything else is a mere shadow of this beast regardless of price. JBL knocked this out of the park. My search has ended.

Bass Forward, Heavy physicality, Excellent upgrade!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I would like to start this by saying that I’m having to rewrite this as my first one violated community guidelines so I guess. But I wanted to preface that I have owned at least 1 of every generation of the JBL Boombox Series (1 OG BB, 2pair Gen 2, 2 pair Gen 3, 2 for the current JBLboombox 4!! I’m also extremely into audio and technology and speakers are an expertise of mine! I personally think that this was the biggest leap forward in the series and although I am still disappointed we reverted back to a 2-way system instead of the pioneering 3-way set up and that is a bummer but as far as feeling the music, want bass? Can’t get enough. These Boombox 4 CRANK that low Freq and can sustain a sub 40 Hz base note on battery for extended periods of time. I had no idea that physics would allow such a small item to create base like it does and that’s given proper acoustics of the room of the hallway ~~you know, you put your speaker somewhere and you’re like it sounds the best right here. That’s the soundstage (ish) but wow! The two base boost options are awesome and remind me of the OG BB with what was called “home and outdoor mode” When I’m rocking my stereo pair of Boombox 4s I basically always have the bass boost feature turned on the deep base (mode 1) and the other option (mode 2) is to have “punchy base” however I don’t recommend that one. Overall super happy with Bluee & Squad box! I will say that the only lighting feature on it is to me a very useful and fun incorporation of LEDs into a portable speaker as the color whether orange or white will show you from a distance what bass mode you’re in but also, you can verify it by a glance and rockin’ these dark orange glows, white punches or nothing at all. :) Oh and the Original JBL I got in 2017 is still working like a charm in a buddy’s garage of mine (battery is shot, must stay plugged in to use) But JBL will last a long time, there’s such a big variety to choose from on the Bluetooth market these days that you can find a speaker for any size occasion or prefer preference. Lastly…✅✅✅✅ AURACAST ✅✅✅✅HAS BEEN FLAWLESS!! 🤩 as I had connection issues with every type of linking JBL’s had to offer since Connect… so JBLs Connect, Connect+, partyboost, ect ….. no good! ESPECIALLY in a dang stereo pair. Now when I turn on both speakers, they automatically link into stereo mode and it is simple as can be and they haven’t even hiccups once for the hundreds of hours they’ve played music already. Well I hope this finds someone who I intent it too, That’s all folks!
