Grundlegend für das Œuvre Franz Ackermanns (*1963), einem der bekanntesten deutschen Künstler seiner Generation, ist das Reisen. Dabei fixiert er noch vor Ort die persönliche Wahrnehmung in sogenannten »Mental Maps«. Diese mentalen Stadtpläne und Landkarten setzt er später im Atelier in großformatige Gemälde um und entwickelt seine Ideen in Installationen weiter, die sich – stark an der Pop-Ästhetik orientiert – aus unterschiedlichen Medien wie Zeichnung, Malerei, Fotografie, Film sowie aus Objekten, Textzitaten und skulpturalen Einbauten zusammensetzen.Im Mittelpunkt dieser monografischen Publikation stehen zwei raumgreifende Installationen Ackermanns: Home, home again sowie sein jüngstes Werk 23 Gespenster, in dem der Künstler die gegenwärtige Flüchtlingsproblematik auf Kuba, den Kanaren und den italienischen Inseln reflektiert.
